School Life Blog Opt-Out

Highfields College operates a ‘School Life Blog’ on its website which increasingly features scans of work, photographs and video to celebrate the good things happening around school.

The blog never provides student names but from time to time, our students will have their work or images / footage of them at work on it.

The blog can be viewed here: www.highfieldscollege.org.uk/blog

The blog is proving to be a source of pleasure and pride for our students. It enhances self-esteem for our young people because they say for all the ‘reputation’ they feel they had at their previous school, this shows they can do just as well as other young people. We find our students love to have their work uploaded to our blog, and the response from parents, who can see what their child is doing in school on a regular basis, has been fantastic.

In terms of the risks of the school life blog, in line with many schools and following advice from organisations such as local authorities and the police, we have taken the view that the risk of a young person being searched up via a trawl through our website then identified is so small that, providing reasonable steps are in place in terms of not naming the child, the practice of school life blogging should continue.

The Department for Education’s broad rule of thumb for schools is that “if the pupil is named, avoid using the photograph. If the photograph is used, avoid naming the pupil”. We will follow this advice for blogging.

We are mindful of the fact that for some families, there may be reasons why their child’s identification is a matter of particular anxiety, and if you have special circumstances either now, or at any time in the future which would affect or change your consent on this issue, you need to let the school office know straight away.

In terms of opting-out you may also want to consult with your child about types of of consent – when we might consent to others using our image and work, and when not – and we invite you to use this communication to explore their feelings about being featured on the school life blog and the images / footage within it. If there is anything you then wish us to follow up with in terms of mentoring, please let us know.
