In Autumn 2023 and Spring 2026, we commissioned the NSPCC to inspect our safeguarding processes and the wider culture at the school – beyond the paperwork and flow diagrams, we wanted to find out how our community members genuinely feel whilst here.

We did this because we are aware that PRUs / APs can have a reputation as being hostile environments and we wanted a second view on that – we also wanted an honest view because, as much as we are confident we have a strong approach, we believe inviting honest second opinions helps us leave no stone unturned.

Highfields NSPCC Report – March 2026

We will work on the recommendations provided but, at the same time, are proud to have what is an overwhelmingly positive report provided by a leading organisation in child welfare. Some standout quotes include:

“Staff described the safeguarding culture as ‘meticulous, organised and there was always someone available,’ with one staff member stating, ‘Safeguarding is everything, it’s what comes first.'”
“When asked what the college did well, one student simply stated, ‘I don’t know, it just works.’”
“One young person shared that she was much happier now she was at Highfields, stating that she felt ‘supported by staff and less anxious’ and felt she could talk to staff about how she felt.”
“The sites were safe, secure, clean, well maintained, welcoming and inspiring… Thank you to all at Highfields for another amazing, inspirational visit. Safeguarding has shone through as has your passion and commitment to your young people.”
