As part of their daily ‘Project’ session, Key Stage 3 students have been looking at the ancient Maya civilisation.
The students have learned about who the ancient Maya people were and where and when they lived. They’ve used maps and atlases to locate Maya cities and identify countries in Mesoamerica.
In addition to this they have learnt about the religious beliefs and rituals of the ancient Maya people and found out more about some of the many gods they worshipped.
The students have also learnt about the Maya number system and have had the opportunity to read and write Maya numbers and solve number problems.
The children have researched about the work of the explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood and have had the opportunity to analyse historical pictures of the cities they discovered.
They have also learnt about the types of food eaten by the ancient Maya people and found out about the significance of corn and chocolate. They’ve even had a taste test on Mayan flavoured chocolate!
