This term we opened our new Ceramics Studio, with Miss Sattar taking the lead in the room as our expert Ceramics Teacher (she has a master’s degree in it and everything!).
The sessions which Miss Sattar leads introduces our young people to a variety of ceramic processes (not just making cups and bowls!) and develops their understanding on how to work with clay and the tools required to produce high-quality ceramic products.
This includes ‘ceramics specific’ techniques such as:
- Design process using a sketchbook
- How to soften and mould clay – and then dry or fire it
- Use of hand-building techniques
- Use of finishing tools
The sessions also include transferrable skills such as:
- Creativity and experimentation
- Time management and the ability to work to deadlines
- Communication skills
- Mapping out / sequencing instructions
- Attention to detail
- A good understanding of health and safety procedures
Here are some snapshots of the excellent work being undertaken in there…
