Life at Highfields College is not all climbing walls, clay work and running around in woodland – as enjoyable and as enriching at these are. Alongside more practical activities, our young people – like students across secondary schools – have to work hard in their core academic subjects with a view to achieving the best grades possible.

Miss Marron has shared some of the English learning and work she has been guiding her Year 10 students in. Miss Marron writes:

“In Year 10 English this half term we have been studying a unit called ‘Love of Literature’. The pupils have been really engaged in this unit and have enjoyed reading short extracts from a variety of books and genres- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Dracula, Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby and (a particular favourite with the pupils) The Woman in Black.

The pupils have been developing a variety of skills including; inferring from the text, dictionary and definition skills, thesaurus skills to up level their vocabulary, sharing their opinions of characters, identifying similes in texts, commenting on authors choice of language and how that helps to create an image in the readers mind and the use of ‘show not tell’. They have also been developing their use of PEEL (point, evidence, explain, link).”
